As a Linux geek I really did like the T-Mobile G1 even with it's shortcomings, but the T-Mobile network in this area is simply inadequate.
Yeah, the reasons I like Linux revolve around open source and open standards. Anything Apple makes is by definition the antithesis of that. That's one of the reasons I stay away from the iPhone - plus I love Blackberry email functionality and I think AT&T's service is horribly overpriced. YMMV.
The iPhone UI is nice and very slick (like all Apple products, very well designed). But I have never had cause for complaint with Blackberry either.
