Checking any easily concealed pricey electronic stuff is not recommended or enforced by anyone. Ditto for jewelery, watches, pharmaceuticals, cash etc. Of course checked luggage theft has been around for a long time but it seems to have gotten much more prevalent with the introduction of the TSA.
