I'd actually recommend Ebisu as well - I don't think there's really a "night scene" in Harajuku (unless it's Cherry Blossom Season) but there's plenty of amazing bars and restaurants in Ebisu (I wish I could remember the one that has all the movie stuff, there was a life-size Darth Vader out front when I went last)...
