Cab question in Santiago

So, I just got back and am a little bit confused here.

I went a couple times to Barrio Bellavista from the Sheraton. Once I walked there and took a cab back. It was from around Pio Nono and the next street up from Bellavista towards Co. San Cristobal. We went across the water and went up that road towards the Sheraton. This was around CLP 6000.

Another trip I cabbed there and we went straight down that road on the Sheraton side of the water. This trip cost about CLP 1200. Coming back, we stayed on the barrio side of the water, coming to the back entrance. This was about CLP 1700.

So...any idea what happened here? I felt that even the first driver's route was pretty direct (that was the way I walked) and quick. Did he bump up the fare when I wasn't paying attention or something?
