Where did you get "reward" ticket from? Nick90274 stated that the ticket was purchased using Amex MR points. This is different than an AA miles award ticket. From AA's perspective this ticket essentially looks like any other ticket, and should be able to be upgraded in the same manner (following rules dependent upon fare code, etc. of course). The Amex MR points are the currency used to settle up with American Express; Amex settles up with AA via "real money"

I'm not 100% sure on that; are there not restrictions that upgrades are limited to published fares; if AMEX has some IT/BT type booking arrangement, I thought that that might make them invalid to upgrade
The best course of action is to cut down on speculation and just call AA imo; if they say no then ask for the reason why it cannot be done and maybe then post that here for possible advice
