I agree. If you only bring a laptop bag, you should be able to put it wherever you want. At your feet, in the overhead, in the aft closet on the 747 upper deck, etc. (As long as it's not totally ridiculous like putting your bag in another passenger's lap, or in his/her footwell, etc.)
