Where did you get "reward" ticket from? Nick90274 stated that the ticket was purchased using Amex MR points. This is different than an AA miles award ticket. From AA's perspective this ticket essentially looks like any other ticket, and should be able to be upgraded in the same manner (following rules dependent upon fare code, etc. of course). The Amex MR points are the currency used to settle up with American Express; Amex settles up with AA via "real money"
