It should be upgradeable depending on the booking class. My dad has used amex membership rewards points to book my AA flights through Amex travel. I've been able to upgrade using EVIP's or miles on different occasions even when I didn't have status.

Nick90274 stated that the ticket was purchased using Amex MR points. This is different than an AA miles award ticket. From AA's perspective this ticket essentially looks like any other ticket, and should be able to be upgraded in the same manner (following rules dependent upon fare code, etc. of course). The Amex MR points are the currency used to settle up with American Express; Amex settles up with AA via "real money"
