Why did captain of US 1549 refer to his plane as "Cactus 1549" ?
Short answer: The sandbox decided that using the former aw callsign (cactus) as the callsign for the combined airline was better than the former eastern callsign (usair).

IMHO While the callsign is just a word it aligning it with cactus was another stupid decision from Tempe. It was logical to keep the callsign aligned with the airline name. That's why it didn't happen.
