It is absolutely wrong. As long as you know your AC Elite card with "Star Gold" logo, you should have access to the lounge. I frequently use SFO both international and domestic lounges, and never had problems (sometimes traveling purely domestic).

It may make sense for you to travel using United's Mileage Plus program if you travel frequently with United. Still no RCC access though, but bonus miles.
