I nicely asked, if all the information necessary is contained on the printed statement, what information do they need from the card?

He responded that it was just policy. My favorite answer.

I suppose they do it for an additional layer of confirmation, but if someone would spend long enough in Photoshop doctoring their mileage statement, then I don't see why they couldn't do the same with the card.
