Another update. This one shows promise.

NWA.com just let me OLCI for my flights tomorrow (SEA-DTW-xxx) with no issue -- and this is the outbound portion of the trip. Nothing is different about this reservation; same name, FF#, upgrades as normal, etc.

Thanks NWA!!! I hope this is a sign of good things ahead and I can OLCI for all itineraries (outbound and inbound) in the future.
