Bible on board?

Last night I was flying LAX-SFO (MD-80, mechanical issues, but that's another thread) and after we landed, I needed to move the grey in-flight services bag in order to access my carry-on. As I was moving it, a Bible slipped out of a small pocket seemingly designed just for the purpose of carrying a book. Also in there was something in braille (I'm assuming emergency instructions).

Of course this piqued my curiosity and I resolved to post here, as a search on "Bible" didn't reveal a prior discussion.

Anyone have an idea of what this is used for on board? Last rites in the event of an emergency? Alternative to "American Way" magazine? Praying for an upgrade?
