Good suggestions! Just to clarify (as I wrote in another recent thread), Mt. Fuji isn't all its cracked up to be. I went one June, and it was super foggy, and the mountain itself wasn't very interesting-mostly barren and volcanic rock. We took a bus to the 5th (I think) station, climbed partway up, and then went home. Fuji is beautiful from a distance on a clear day, but the only reason to climb it is to say you did it. I've read many travel blog reports about the entire experience of hiking Fuji, and none of them were very positive. There are tons of better things to do in the greater Tokyo area, and if they want a day trip, I hear Nikko and Kamakura are both safe bets.
yeah it's really better from a distance. I climbed to the top. took about 8 hours. up and back..just for the sunrise which is spectacular. otherwise fuji is pretty ugly up close...
