When an individual gets a boarding pass for the stand by flight, can't they just request a specific seat assignment (aisle or window)? It sounds like the person given the middle seat could have asked for an aisle seat since they actually were available. If they are available, I don't think the GA could not assign it. On the other hand, if you are going standby, sometimes you feel so happy to get a seat at all, you just don't ask.
