I believe if you're on an advance ticket you are not theoretically allowed to sit anywhere other than the reserved seat. They are normally crammed together with the other advance purchases (often away from buffet car etc) leaving more space for higher fare tickets in other carriages. Its just a question of whether the conductor will care!
