... or you can do my favourite trick, which is look for a pair reserved between two stations where the train has already passed the starting station (e.g. reserved from Bristol Temple Meads to Paddington; you get on at Bath Spa). On busy-ish services, it greatly reduces the chance someone will sit in that seat simply because most people can't be bothered to look too closely.
