Well, not sure about iPhone specifically as I thought there was something about those not being normally "unlockable" (but I don't have one, so I haven't folowed that much), but it is easy to get AT&T to provide unlock codes for regular phones. It may take a few calls, but they will do it. I got them to unlock my RAR within the first week of my starting my account. I got them to unlock a broadband dongle the first time I called after starting service. All free.
