Definitely a ridiculous fee, even in light of the present economic situation.

I will often take the emailed itinerary, display it in "print" mode, capture the screen image and then manipulate it in either Word or Excel to remove all of the ad garbage. It's really simpler than it sounds and much faster than waiting to receive something from AA, even if there were no charge.
