I've never heard that. There are lots of "roads" nearby that are banned, even for 4 wheel drive rentals, by the major companies (you have to book your 4WD with a tour operator). But ASP to AYQ is an easy drive otherwise (just long, boring, not really worth doing unless you cannot fly in/out of AYQ). Lots of better scenery and driving nearby.
