Are you at LAX ? I rember I had such " "preboard" without boarding passes " experience last year, when I flew FLL->SFO.(making stops at TPA,DEN and LAS). We were told we had to make plane change at LAS. At LAS we were not given boarding pass, instead of leading to the pre-boarding area by gate agent. I guess what you saw could be the similar situation like us.
