More flights for Reagan National

New security measures must be in place first

MSNBC STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

WASHINGTON, Oct. 18 — Flights in and out of Reagan National Airport will be increased to allow travel to 17 additional cities beginning Oct. 26, the Transportation Department said Thursday. Flights also will begin to Midway Airport in Chicago. The new cities include service to and from Atlanta, Houston and Seattle. Flights to eight other cities began Oct. 4 when Reagan National became the last major commercial airport to reopen following last month’s terrorist attacks.

. . . .

The new flights, both in and out, will not begin until stringent security precautions are in place.

They include requiring passengers to go through two security checkpoints, showing identification twice; departures through specially secured gates; armed air marshals on all flights; reinforced cockpit doors; and expanded identification checks for airport employees and flight crews. Pilots also must fly direct routes in and out of the airport rather than following the Potomac River.

. . . .

The airport already has flights to and from Atlanta, Boston, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas, Minneapolis, Newark, New York LaGuardia and Pittsburgh.

The new cities to be served are Charleston, S.C.; Charlotte, N.C.; Cincinnati; Columbus, Ohio; Denver; Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Houston; Kansas City, Mo.; Miami; Milwaukee; Orlando, Fla.; Philadelphia; Phoenix; St. Louis; Seattle and Toronto. Service also will begin to and from Chicago’s Midway Airport.
