It is an informal benefit so the rules are whatever AA makes it that day. It has always been waived for me as an EXP. Worth a call for you to ask for the waiver, it could be that the agent did not notice your EXP status (the EXP desk agents also handle non-EXP calls at times), or it could be that the EXP has to be traveling on at least one sector of the same itin (the latter is more likely).
