Thats just how it works. Referring to the redemption chart, you can travel from anywhere in Zone 1 to anywhere in zone 8, using connecting flights too, using any combination of *A carriers, by any reasonable route, one-way in First class, for 70,000 miles + tax.

So you could go, for example MAN-FRA-NRT (LH then LH) or LBA-LHR-NRT. (BD then NH)

Postscript : as well as being a fab way to travel, choosing F will give you extra luggage allowance, which may come in very handy if you're heading out to stay.
