Some folks would actually prefer a shorter, quicker flight. I usually book the longest flight I can find, but if my plans change or the weather looks bad, then the nonstop might work out better. But I can't imagine paying $99 a week in advance for the nonstop unless my plans had seriously changed!
We generally go for the shortest overall itinerary and, if we end up a few miles short, we take another trip. That said, I'd not pay them $99 for the direct flight. If they need help and want to offer it to me, I'll take it, but not pony up the cash.
