As indicated by other posters, this has been discussed at length. Essentially, AA is trying to be proactive while making a few bucks by charging you more and avoid paying for either VB or IVBs.
I would take them up only if I had a tight connection to begin with and needed to get to my destination in a timely manner thus making a later flight not a good option (probably only for a business trip or to a destination that I wanted to spend as much time at ASAP).
