Thats very true - but having to take a couple of CW flights first to qualify for Silver and therefore seat pre-selection might just put some pax off making the switch to BA.

No, I'm sure he's not alone.
But BA is not looking at individuals. Of all the entire universe of J cabin passengers, how many might fly BA on a particular flight but are put off by the seating policy. Frankly, I expect BA knows the answer that many here don't want to acknowledge: next to b*gger all. And those few who are put off probably don't outweigh the costs of any more complex system than the present. Let's face it, not only is it good for the passengers that BA traditionally likes to target, it's also cheap to run.
