I've had a similar experience. Weather delays at BOS meant that my connection to CLT-ATL was blown and the remaining flight to ATL was after the last shuttle back to CHA had left. They put me on standby for CLT-CHA (after first screwing up and trying to send me to CHO), and I cleared easily.
