I'm not an expert, but my understanding is as follows.

- No changes under any circumstances after first leg flown
- Anyone who hasn't taken the outbound leg can't take the return leg
- Fine if only one person turns up for the return leg
- No adverse consequences for anyone who doesn't show for the return leg

Not sure about the time limit.
