I didn't expect a snack, or a pre-departure drink, but normally with any major airline you get some sort of drink - just seemed that with AA they were cost-cutting in the quantity of juice they were pouring (cup of ice with a splash of coke.)
I thought this as true of most, if not all domestic US carrier in Economy.
I haven't bought a BA ticket in awhile, but as I recall, they use to be a bit more expensive than US domestic tickets, so you do pay for the full can.
