I am in the hotel now. It's not obvious, but there are partitions that you can pull out that close off the area with the sink, tub, shower, toilet, and dressing room from the area with the bedroom and desk. The partitions between the sink and bedroom and between the sink and hallway are opaque, but the one between the dressing area and hallway has a heavily smoked glass panel in it.
It creeps me out to look at the sink and tub from the bed and desk, so I pull out the partition that blocks that view even when I'm staying alone.
Edited to add: I've stayed in several other hotels that have this room arrangement (the Hyatt on the Bund is the only one I can recall by name right now) and never failed to find pull-out partitions of this sort.
I guess the glass in the partition between the dressing area isn't that heavily smoked. With the light in that area on and the light in the hallway off, I just walked smack into the closed partition.
