Even if you did get to 1MM on AA, as far as earning miles and redeeming for domestic flights, the only advantage would be the 25% earning bonus you would get as a Gold. That would bring the ~8K miles from your eight CA roundtrips up to 10K, still only 40% of what you would need for a free ticket.

Southwest's segment system will always earn quicker than any of the legacy airlines when you fly exclusively short trips. And that's doubly true for you, if you're earning 2 credits per trip as a student.
