If you plan to do any long haul stuff I ALWAYS buy round the world fares. I can do JFK-FRA-SIN-NRT-LAX for $5000 USD ALL IN on SQ round the world fare (Business Class). This allows me to schedule meetings in all the above cities and retun to YYZ within 8-9 days so very productive for me.

Star Alliance RTW fare is about $7000 USD ALL IN (Business Class) so shop airline specific. Some airlines, like Air Canada, only use Star Alliance RTW fares.

Swiss and Singapore have the best RTW fares in my opinion.
