Not sure, but is there a code share flight on your return trip. I.e. and AC flight number on someone else's equipment? If yes, would your AC allowance of 4, soon to be 3 be OK without an additional payment? Just a thought for something to look into.

It only makes sense to me that one would most likely end up abiding (or forced) to the check-in airline's rules. (regardless if the connecting metal is different and has more flexible rules).
