LGA doesn't have monitors. I didn't ask the GA because I was in the boarding area for an hour before the flight, and assumed that if the upgrade cleared I would have been called. It was only when I was on board (and in the air!) that I realized that there were empty F seats.
The moral of the story, I suppose, is don't ever assume anything, especially in LGA. Next time I'll ask.
