The answer to that is unfortunately "it depends". I can't of course begin to predict what the weather or other delaying factors could be on the day of your flight. By all means, get on the first available flight to soothe your nerves. The extra time spent during your connection is the primary reason airport bars were invented.
Contrary to the notion that you may have to ride the GreyDog all the way to Vancouver, I would again endorse the shorter drive to Kelowna (delays due to valley fog are much less frequent since they installed the ILS a few years ago) or Cranbrook, with its much lower ILS minimums and even less chance of the need to use them. Either alternate airport can get you to YVR or YYC.
