1. It got reset at the end of the calendar year, i.e. Dec 31
2. You can keep the status until March 31 of the second year following membership qualification, i.e. if you qualify now, you can keep your status until March 31, 2010. The only way to have a "semi" lifetime elite status is to qualify for JAL Global Club. You can find more info here. http://www.ar.jal.com/world/en/jalmile/jgc/
