Hacienda Puerta Campeche / San Jose
Campeche: We stayed at this one for three days. The hotel staff was incredibly friendly and accomodating. The grounds, especially the pool, is a work of art and really a nice experience. There is not much more relaxing that lounging in the hammock suspended over the pool. As a Gold, I was upgraded to a suite, which was nice. Campeche is a rather interesting town to stay in with more to do than at the other Haciendas which are quite remote. We visited Edzna from Campeche, which was fun, as it was one of the diminishing number of sites that still let you climb the ruins.
San Jose: I agree with the previous post that it is difficult to find. We left Campeche, stopped in Merida, and then headed for San Jose. We made a few wrong turns and finally got there. It was nice and much more remote than the other one. We got upgraded to a suite with an outdoor jacuzzi tub, which was nice. The grounds are attractive but the bugs are relentless. A good side trip is Ixamal (sp.) which is a yellow city with maya ruins throughout the city.
We also visited another hacienda on the way to Edzna from Campeche, the pool was enjoyable and it was a nice place for a lunch and visit.
All in all, the hacienda experience was nice. It was a good change of pace from Cancun and these places are destinations in themselves. Of course, they are not for everyone. If Cancun is your ideal kind of destination, then these probably will not be your thing.
