One way vs. RT AP points is a little much I'd think, but can only say that maybe AP strategy is similar to regular Air Canada pricing strategy, where there is no rhyme or reason behind it.

As for one way flights using Aeroplan - yes, these flights do have to be all AC metal. Those are just the rules. For the record, not many other, if any, airlines offer this type of reward.
