The lowest published CO fare I can find LHR-EWR is $240+tax for an XLX71SW fare in January/February. Did you look EWR-LHR or LHR-EWR? Also, what dates did you look at (approximately)? Was the fare $248 or was the total $248? There are a LOT of taxes on LHR tix.
