DO NOT TAKE THE TRAIN. It will only take you as far as the AVE station, from which you will still need a bus (or maybe long walk) to reach the centre. On second thoughts, the AVE station is a very pleasant place to kill a couple of hours in (a lot better than the airport) so, if you don't mind remaining in an enclosed space, you may want to take the train and just chill out at the station. Plenty of options for snacking and shopping.

There is no ambiguity about where to get off with the bus. You just get off at the final stop, which is right at the Alameda Principal, Malaga's most central point.
