My wife and daughter will be coming with checked luggage - so the options for transportation to Extepona are taxi, or rental car. It is more logical for the one(s) in our family who are arriving last to have the checked luggage - otherwise, I would have to worry about the luggage (at the airport) for 3 hours.
Note: The express bus from the Airport to Marbella is very much geared up for luggage - most people using it have luggage.
In fact, so too are the onward busses. - Keep in mind these are long distance buses, NOT city-centre/urban hop on hop off affairs. The vehicles used are coaches with large luggage storage underneath.
As such, I certainly wouldn't let luggage be the reason putting me off using them at least as far as Marbella.
However, having said that I probably would take a taxi for at least the last bit to the hotel to avoid any hassle. [I've mainly added this post for the benefit of anyone reading this later.]
