F class experience on cancelled/reinstated HKG-CDG
I had stopped flying TG after two miserable F flights earlier this year CDG-HKG: Old seats on CDG-BKK forcing me to reschedule to next day. Unvolontary downgrade BKK-HKG coz change of equipment from old to new 747 (14 to 9 seats), TG refusing any compensation. Dismal food and wine,...
Because of the cancellation/reinstatement discussed at length in this forum, TG flights HKG-BKK-CDG on my desired day of travelled became empty with numerous award seats. So I cancelled my CX paid tickets and booked two F class awards using BMI BD miles+cash (total of 70,000 miles plus 900EUR per return ticket HKG-CDG-CDG inclusive of taxes, a great deal). I am happy to report that I have found F class much improved from my experiences in Dec07 and Feb08. First the food was clearly superior. For example, rather than the micro shrimps I had, this time I got big prawns. The oscietra caviar is good, better than the standard farm-fish caviar that TG used to serve (or that CX is serving). Service at the F lounge and spa has dramatically improved with more staff in both (including many more masseuse). Very attentive service now. Unbelievably, our luggage was delivered first at CDG.
I still have two major complains:
1) In transit we landed from HKG (and departed to CDG on the same plane) at gate C10, the furthest on concourse C. A charming Thai guy waited for us to escort to the lounge but it is a very long walk and no buggy. Not even trolleys that we could push and put our stuff on. Sorry but I am not young anymore and was wearing a heavy overcoat for the early arrival in freezing Paris, a laptop and an attaché case. My wife had the same plus her handbag. The guy did not even offer to help carrying anything but walked aristocratly ahead of us (I know where is the lounge so that is of little help). I did ask him if he could find us a trolley or could help carry my wife's laptop and only got a typical Thai shrug meaning that it was not among his job description. After I got very upset as my wife was getting tired, he reluctantly took her laptop halfway to the lounge. Same unpleasant experience when reboarding the plane an hour later. I know the excuse of "it's AOT not TG", but that is not acceptable. Note that the situation is also bad at HKG as TG has moved check-in to terminal 2 which caters to charter airlines and other cheap ones . The fee charged by the airport is cheaper for TG, but it means a long walk thru immigration, taking two succesive trains (have to remain standing, no seats), then a long walk again. The plane departs from the same gate as before (near the nice TG lounge), but the check-in has been moved to another terminal. We used to have buggies from terminal 1, but that is gone coz terminal 2. Granted we survived, but that is not what you expect in F.
2) While food has improved wines have not. Champagne was either Bollinger grande cuvée 1999 (on HKG-BKK) or Dom (on BKK-CDG) and that is excellent. But all the French wines are low-quality; no grand or premier cru anymore. JW Blue had also disapered (although listed on wine list).
While CX607 was half empty, TG930 was full; the F lounge was very busy.
Alltogether our F experience was a PLEASANT surprise, despite the two criticisms. Let's now hope that TG will focus on consistency and introduce better pricing. Current F fares out of CDG to HKG are €4500 or 50% more expensive that the nonstop Biz fare on CX (€2960 tax included). Given the new flat bed on CX, its consistency of service/food/wine, and the nonstop feature, it is a no brainer for paid tickets. And if you want the luxury of the wonderful new CX F suite you "only" fork €4960 tax incl. for a superior nonstop product.
