This is a surcharge!"

Ha, not for me. I fly that route in the NRT-YYZ direction in Executive First as part of a corporate fare so it is booked under another *A carrier's marketing code (you can guess who, I am sure

) so as a result, it's technically no longer an AC flight, therefore,
none of the AC surcharges whether it's YQ or special 777 aircraft surcharge apply.

You guys are way too focused on Aeroplan and Air Canada, who says you need to book with AC when flying on Air Canada? People who fly AC 77W in EF and pay those ridiculous surcharges need to go out of Air Canada forum and see there is a whole world out there. Unless, you are one of those "upgraders", then I am sure you still think you are getting a good deal - that is as long as you win the Aerolotto and U/G will continue in the future.
Edit to add: I don't have a problem with AC asking more money openly on 77W because they openly state the reason for it as opposed to making up excuses. People have a choice of accepting it or not and AC brands it properly, not somekind of hidden fee or unexplained charges. The important thing is disclosure. In the case of YQ, no, I think the OP got a taste of a not-so-ethical treatment and that is not o.k.
