I'm also a top tier on American, and my success rate for upgrades is also considerably higher on them than on DL.

Your experience on Delta will most likely be very different, IMHO mainly for two reasons:
- DL has a smaller percentange of 1st class seats than NW
- Some cities are really Elite heavy, e.g., ATL
I was a Silver Medallion in 2005 and Platinum every year since 2006. My experience as PM is as follows:
- Every year the upgrade list gets longer and longer, and it becomes harder to get an upgrade (I was once on a flight LAX to ATL where the upgrade list had >50 persons).
- Out of LAX I get upgraded about 70% of the time (BTW I typically purchase K-fare or higher).
- Out of JFK and SLC a little more, say 80%.
- Out of ATL less than 50%.
