I had similar experiences like yours, mostly on the reservations with the advanced purchase rate, exclusive 2 for 1 rate or after room upgrade. Usually you will see "call for details" on top of your reservations on the web page.
Who did you inquire with? Did you call directly to the hotels and ask? i don't think Ambassador services can view whether your room is upgraded or not. I guess they can only view the room type on your original reservation. Correct me if I'm wrong.
