Well, I disagree that new pretender necessarily implies all that (beyond perhaps historical connotations). IMO in sport for example a new pretender could emerge to challenge an existing champion and that is a complement rather than a dismissal. However life is too short to quibble and veer this far off topic, so instead I shall avoid excessive purple prose in future
