Yes, poor site design/application design, it is misleading.

I go on the US shuttle DCA-LGA. If I go each week, I get 500 miles on AA (Counts for status) and 500 miles from US (counts for status and segments) and I can end up with middle tier status on US and AA, without setting foot on an AA aircraft.

They should fix the way this appears on their web sites.
