I have a pair of E3s that have a partially-broken ear piece (I stepped on the piece, and the end - where the tip is attached - broke off). Amazingly enough, they still produce terrific sound, but obviously outside sound isolation is not possible.
If the repair costs run high, I'll just replace them.
Your situation sounds like what my son did (see post earlier) - it doesn't cost much to return to Shure to see what they say. In our case, it was a simple fix and replacement, even though it was clearly his fault.
