i do the same as redhunter with the armrest and have never been told to lower it tho some f/a's noticed that i raised the armrest and have said something like, "oh, you know the secret" or "i'm impressed"

seriously, on the aisle armrest, find the "armpit" at the back end of the underside of the armrest and there will be a small cutout with a little lever in it. push or pull the lever fwd or back about 1/4" and that will release the armrest (n.b. some can be sticky so watch your fingernails ).
