I can suggest some places here in Siracusa that are nice to stay at, just let me know either by post or PM. Also around Taormina. We rent our house out there but it is full through new years. If your plans change PM me and I can send you more info on it.

Catania is a big party town, so if you want to party I can suggest much, otherwise you could spend a few nights in the other areas they suggest above. Catania has the best bus transport options to all the areas you seek (and trains to a smaller extent) but is kind of like the Philly of Sicilia.

Agrigento is easier to get to from Palermo.
